Although it's a very common procedure, the removal of wisdom teeth is a serious surgery requiring careful post-operative care. Adhering to Dr. Mizrahi's comprehensive recovery guidelines will minimize unnecessary pain and swelling, as well as prevent infections.
What to Expect During Recovery
Immediately following the procedure, Dr. Mizrahi will place gauze in the mouth to control the bleeding. The patient will be advised to replace the gauze throughout the day until the bleeding subsides and a blood clot forms.
As the blood clot is what facilitates healing, it is extremely important that patients avoid disturbing it. To that end, you will be advised to avoid rinsing the mouth vigorously, using straws, smoking, drinking alcohol and brushing the teeth next to the extraction site during the initial recovery period. Committed to your post-operative comfort and safety, Dr. Mizrahi will prescribe medication to alleviate the pain, as well as antibiotics to prevent infection.
For a few days after the procedure, some swelling is to be expected, and will be proportional to the surgery involved. For example, a simple wisdom tooth extraction will yield significantly less swelling than the complex removal of impacted wisdom teeth. To minimize the swelling, patients are advised to continuously apply ice to the affected area for the first three days.
Beginning the day after surgery, Dr. Mizrahi will recommend warm salt water rinses six times a day, especially after eating. For several days following the procedure, patients should eat soft, nutritious foods, drink plenty of fluids, avoid strenuous activity and maintain optimal oral hygiene to promote healing and ensure a swift recovery.
Once the initial recovery period is complete, patients are advised to take special care of the cavities where the wisdom teeth used to be. Over time they will fill with new tissue, however, in the meantime they need to be kept clean with optimal oral hygiene and routine salt water rinses after meals.
Preventing Dry Sockets
Dry sockets occur when the blood clot is prematurely dislodged from the tooth socket, causing severe pain at the surgical site. A well-known complication associated with wisdom teeth removal, dry sockets can be prevented by avoiding the use of straws until healing is complete.
If a dry socket occurs, please contact Dr. Mizrahi immediately for treatment.
