What is TMJ?
TMJ is the acronym for the temporomandibular joints, the joints and muscles in the jaw that allow you to open and close your mouth when talking, eating, swallowing or any other movement involving using your jaw. It is commonly understood that when you are talking about TMJ you are talking about TMJ disorders and non-optimum conditions. These non-optimum conditions can be severe to mild and can dramatically affect your quality of life.
TMJ disorders can include symptoms such as:
- Pain in the sides of the face
- Jaw Pain
- Neck Pain
- Muscle Stiffness in the Jaw
- Locking of the Jaw
- A Painful or Non-Painful Clicking, Popping or Grating of the Jaw Joint When Opening and Closing the Mouth
A probable major cause of TMJ disorders is night grinding; when your jaw muscle are tense or stressed you tend to unconsciously grind your teeth at night, this worsens the situation and can actually harm your teeth as well. Waking up with headaches, earaches and jaw pain are most likely the result of a TMJ disorder.
What is Botox?
Botox is a substance derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is a drug used to temporarily paralyze specific muscles that it is injected into. Cosmetically, it is used to remove wrinkles and has become a very popular method to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions about Botox for TMJ
How Much Do the BOTOX Injections Cost?
The average cost for BOTOX for TMJ varies from patient to patient. The cost of treatment will be based upon the following:
- The muscles involved in causing the TMJ.
- The areas that will need to be injected, which may include the jaw, the forehead and the temples.
- The number of vials of BOTOX that will be needed.
How Long Is the BOTOX Treatment Procedure?
Dr. Mizrahi will determine the number of injections you need for your treatment program. This will determine how long the procedure will take. Typically, it ranges from 10 to 30 minutes. In many cases, it will require as many as three appointments to complete the full treatment program.
Is the BOTOX Treatment Painful?
Injections are rarely completely pain free, but the discomfort is usually minimal and limited to a quick prick. Using either a topical anesthetic or applying a cold pack prior to the procedure will often reduce these relatively low levels of pain. If you are particularly sensitive to injections or have a fear of them, be sure to mention this to Dr. Mizrahi when you discuss your treatment program.
What Is the Recovery from BOTOX Therapy for TMJ Treatment Like?
There may be a little redness or swelling at the injection sites for a short time, immediately following the procedure. This is typically not severe enough to prevent patients from returning to work, directly from the dentist’s chair. There are only two things to be aware and careful of:
- Do not rub or massage the injection site(s) or the area surrounding it.
- Do not exert yourself and restrict your physical activity for a time (Dr. Mizrahi will tell you the appropriate length of time for your treatment.)
Limiting physical activity is important, as you want to keep the BOTOX where it was injected. This is the only way to ensure it does the job it was intended for: relaxing the muscles around the temporomandibular joint and, therefore, the tension, that is causing the TMJ. It also ensures that the BOTOX does not affect any other muscles of the face and jaw.
Will Anyone Notice That I've Had BOTOX in My Jaw?
There are several reasons for people to have BOTOX injections in the area of the jaw, beyond relaxing the muscles that cause teeth grinding and tension, and result in the headaches, jaw pain and other symptoms associated with TMJ. Specifically, it may be injected into the masseter muscle—which is the muscle used for chewing—to reduce its size and recontour the shape of the lower jaw. Since BOTOX can be used for this purpose, it is possible that the results of the BOTOX injections for TMJ may be noticeable, although this is not necessarily the case. It will depend upon the quantity of the product and precisely where it is injected. Because this varies with each individual patient, you can get an accurate assessment in a private consultation with Dr. Mizrahi.
