Before Anesthesia

As oral surgery is commonly performed under local or general anesthesia, patients are required to follow very specific guidelines in the hours leading up to the procedure to ensure a safe, optimal outcome.

Although Dr. Mizrahi will thoroughly explain the preparatory period during your initial consultation, these are the general guidelines patients must follow:

3 days before surgery

Immediately following a surgical procedure, you will be unable to drive due to the lingering effects of the anesthesia. As such, you must arrange to have an adult accompany you to Dr. Mizrahi's office and drive you home once your oral surgery is complete.

6-12 hours before surgery

For six hours prior to the appointment, patients are to avoid eating and drinking anything—including water. In addition, they should avoid smoking for a minimum of twelve hours prior to the procedure. If you are suffering from a cold, sore throat or upset stomach the day of the surgery, please contact the office immediately.

When getting ready for surgery, patients are advised to wear loose-fitting clothing and low-heeled shoes. They should also avoid lipstick, excessive makeup, and nail polish.

Immediately prior to the procedure, Dr. Mizrahi will ask you to remove your contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures.

24 hours after surgery

For a period of 24 hours after the procedure, patients should not drive or operate machinery, due to the lingering effects of the anesthesia.
