Why choose a Los Angeles oral surgeon?
There are nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association which include pediatric dentistry, endodontics, and orthodontics as well as oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS). Maxillofacial refers the region of the jaws and face. An oral surgeon is a dental specialist that specializes in treating injuries and defects in the hard and soft tissues in the mouth, head, and neck as well as the jaws and face. Los Angeles oral surgeon Dr. Parvaz Mizrahi is a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with thousands of procedures to her credit.
Training for an oral surgeon is at least an 8 year post graduate commitment including a four-year degree in dentistry followed by a minimum four-year residency program.
Oral surgeon residents are trained with medical residents in many areas including advanced anesthesia, reconstructive and general surgery, bone and tissue grafting, and pathology. This residency is conducted in a hospital setting as well as outpatient facilities, dental practices and surgery centers. In this way invaluable experience is gained in treating oral and maxillofacial patients with a wide array of needs.
Often graduates go on to complete fellowship training to further hone their skills and gain experience.
Partners in care
Oral surgeons are partners in the care of patients who might require a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. For example, patients who have received trauma to the face may be treated by an oral surgeon as well as a plastic surgeon. Many Los Angeles medical specialties refer to oral surgeons when faced with complex issues of the face, mouth and neck.
Primary care providers will refer their patients to an oral surgeon when functional issues are the prime concern over simple aesthetics. Oral surgeons are highly skilled in treating congenital growth problems, serious oral disease, trauma to the face and related problems as well as cleft palate and sleep apnea.
Trained in high level anesthetics
Oral surgeons are trained in pain control and advanced anesthesia. They can provide advanced local, sedation and general anesthesia in an office setting. This provides patients with convenience and in many cases a less stressful setting for their procedure.
